Celebrating Ria: An Internship Story at Strand + Strategy

One of the most rewarding parts of running Strand + Strategy Communications is creating space for emerging marketing and communications professionals to step into real, meaningful work early in their careers.

From January to April, I had the pleasure of working with Ria Mirano as Strand + Strategy’s very first intern through the winter season, and she quickly became a thoughtful and reliable part of my week! She’s done an incredible job, and while I will miss her dearly, she will always be an honorary member of the team. A big shout out to Douglas College’s Business Internship program and team, who thoughtfully facilitated the process (if your organization is interested in supporting future students and internships, you can learn more at Douglas College’s Career Centre).

During her time, Ria contributed to several Strand + Strategy blog posts, providing strategic consulting, supporting research for several projects, and even joined client consultations with my supervision. For someone early in their career, one thing that really impressed me about Ria is how she consults and advises so naturally. I really enjoyed running ideas or challenges past her and hearing her creative responses and solutions. I learned so much from her! She approached the work with curiosity and care, asking thoughtful questions, and showing a genuine interest in how projects come together behind the scenes.

Internships are often about learning by doing, and Ria embraced that fully. Whether she was helping shape written content or exploring research to support a project, she showed a willingness to engage deeply with the work and grow along the way.

Ria’s Reflections

As she wraps up her time with us, Ria shared a few reflections on her experience:

I really enjoyed the strategic side of the work, like brainstorming ideas, consulting on projects, and then bringing those ideas to life creatively. Being part of that full process, from concept to execution, was incredibly rewarding.

Working with Paige helped me rediscover my confidence in writing. I learned how to refine and curate content to match different tones, themes, and voices, while getting back into a creative rhythm that felt both natural and enjoyable.

Our post-task discussions also gave me valuable insight into the nuances of marketing, communications, and change management. Hearing about Paige’s experiences and lessons gave me a clearer understanding of the field and guidance I’ll carry forward in my career.

I particularly enjoyed working on blog content and developing newsletter content. Writing for Untangle Money was another highlight, this was a new space for me and I genuinely enjoyed it. Through these projects, I strengthened my writing and strategic planning skills, while building a deeper understanding of different industries, products, and services.

What’s Next for Ria

Ria is looking ahead to the next chapter of her career in marketing and communications. Here’s what she had to say about what she’s looking for in the working world:

I’m interested in roles that combine strategy and creativity. I’m drawn to work that involves shaping ideas, building narratives, and developing engaging content with a clear purpose for the audiences that brands want to reach.

I’m also eager to explore a range of industries, including lifestyle, travel, finance, and food. In terms of experience, I’m interested in opportunities across strategic planning, copywriting, content strategy, brand storytelling, campaign development, and broader areas within digital marketing.

Additionally, through my experience working with Paige, I’ve developed a strong interest in change management and communications. Learning more about these spaces has sparked my curiosity, and I’m open to exploring opportunities that intersect with internal communications, organizational change, and strategic messaging in the future.

If you’re looking for a thoughtful, curious early-career digital marketing and communications professional, I highly recommend connecting with Ria and exploring her work. Please visit her creative portfolio and connect with her on LinkedIn!
